The 2012 edition of one of Africa’s most prestigious entertainment awards shows  (which was billed to take place yesterday night, Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 9pm but actually started Sunday Morning at about 12:30 am) was hosted by singer Omawumi and rapper M.I (As if you don't know that....) took place at the expo hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites for the third time in a row.
The Usual suspect:
Rapper Vector might consider himself the trail blazer of the night winning two awards as expected. ‘Best Rap Single’ category for his hit ‘Angeli’ featuring 9ice and ‘Lyricist on the Roll’ award which was presented by the five-time winner of that category, Modenine. I like the way this award played out with Vector shouting out the other nominees in this category. Erigga even joined him on stage as he picked up the awards with jokes been made about how big "the shoe" he has to fill.

The biggest award of the night ‘Artiste of the Year’ went to Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun. The 22-year-old, who also walked away with two awards, was also awarded the ‘Revelation of the Year’ award. ‘I want to thank you all for supporting me‘, Wizzy said as he picked up his second award even though he  was somehow missing to pick up the 'Revelation of the Year' award. Skales and Shadey picked up this award on his behalf.

Meanwhile, the MAVIN Records crew picked up awards for ‘Best Vocal Performance’ in both male and female categories – with Wande Coal’s ‘Private trips’ and Tiwa Savage’s ‘Love me 3x’ coming out tops respectively.

The coveted ‘Next Rated’ award which comes with the special prize of a Hyundai Sonata was won by none other than Davido, leaving Eva, Flowsick and Praiz in his trail. Eva was emotional after this one but Davido, who has had a fantastic run in the last year – releasing three number-one singles and subsequently a debut album – ‘Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis‘ thoroughly deserves this.

Surprises:
Even though they had six nominations and did major collaborations with Akon and Rick Ross, i still think this one was ntexpected and after a two-year hiatus P-Square came back to win two awards, yes two, not one, two awards – in the ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Best R&B-Pop Album’ categories. In addition, elder brother Jude Okoye also received the award for ‘Best Music Video,’ beating Clarence Peters. I think the two Album categories should have gone to Superstar. How does P-Square beat Wizkid to Pop or RnB by anyway? Am still in shock.

Former P-Square Collaborator, May D also springed one at us, he beat Tiwa Savage, Bez and Wande Coal to win the ‘Best R&B Single’ for his dancehall-pop themed ‘Soundtrack.’

Sound Sultan also beat Psquare, Sauce Kid in the ‘Best Collabo’ category for his duet with Flavour and Xcel on ‘Orobo’ remix. I honestly think Carolina by Sinzu and Davido should have taken this one and i will even rate the P-Square Chop my money song higher than the Orobo remix.

Highlights of the show were the live band performances from Bez and Praiz, who rendered their duet ‘Stupid song‘. Timi Dakolo also gave a stunning performance with his ‘Great nation’ song, and surprisingly rookies Burna Boy and Dammy Krane were also amazing. Eva's performance will best be remebered for her dance routine even though you could blame the technical issues, that has become synonymous with the Headies of late.

One couldn’t help but notice the absence of quite a number of celebrities (most especially the winners). Afrobeat maestro Femi Kuti, who was billed to be inducted into the ‘Hall of Fame’ and perform for the first time at a Nigerian awards show was also surprisingly absent.

The show however ended on a high note, with the EME all stars - Banky W, Wizkid, Skales, Niyola, Shaydee and DJ Xclusive delivering the performance of the night as it rightly ends the night on a high.

M.I and Omawumi are clowns by the way, they made the show amazing with their jabs and continous humor -which temporaily made us forget that time was far spent and technical issues was multiplying as the show progressed.

Ah!!! And i remember the "Mock Headies" was also announced with Banky W winning the Label 'Head' of the year for the size of his head. Dr Sid ft Davido for Best Live Recording for the D'Banj Argument, Tonto Dikeh had Vic-O to contend with but came out tops as 'Balistic Song of the year'.  I think that's all.

The Headies came, we saw, and somehow we shared the spoils with lots of big ups and technical issues at the event and a few surpises to add to the mix too. All in all, Well done to the organisers especially for the "Headies Veteran Night" that went down on Friday night at the same venue.
